Ebube (Regina Daniels), a young and beautiful girl makes an encounter with a marine spirit, ugomiri, when she mistakenly trespassed on this entity’s path by going to the stream during an odd time of the day to fetch water. In anger, the marine spirit threatened to kill her, but she begs for compassion and promises to do whatever the spirit wants. The marine spirit then initiated her as her daughter and henceforth, always granted her many favours that makes her stand out successfully among her peers.
Elements of production (notable camera shot, angles, movements etc.)
The movie is good fair element of production and a nice story. It tries to point out some superstitious occurrences in the society especially the rural areas. It tried to portray a particular culture in a given society which is the fishing festival, but the scene was not believable as it did not portray what a real festival should look like. Imagine a festival whereby only six men participated, no crowd was there to witness the event and it was just a man of all the elders in the community that rewarded the winner.
Also, the costumes were not really good and the after effects used were not enhanced. The river goddess did not appear to be realistic, everything about her costume were not looking natural and I think they have to work on that aspect because they tried in some other aspect such as sound and picture quality.
The movie title ‘fish girl’ was not portrayed in this part 1. I am sure many people would be expecting to see Ebube transform into a fish or mermaid but nothing of such was portrayed.
ELEMENTS OF PRODUCTION
AUDIO: The movie has a very good sound and nice synchronization of the lip movement and the sound.
PICTURE QUALITY: This movie has good camera quality. In fact it was shot in HD with lighting and background in perfect concord.
CASTING AND SCREENPLAY: The story seems to be interesting but was not properly told especially with the use of transitions. Though the majority of the cast in the movie are not popular actors, they tried but they still need to upgrade their acting skill. The major character (Regina Daniels) did a good job though.
Most of the shots used were Medium Shots (MS) and long shots (LS)
Extreme long shot:
Over the shoulder shot:
CONCLUSION: The production team tried a lot especially with the picture quality owing to the fact that they are upcoming and likewise the cast used in this movie; Practice makes perfect. I am expecting better movies from this production team.
Favourite quote: by Ebube’s hater who later turned her (Ebube’s) friend, Nonye “you know there is no reward for a singer in the fishing festival” this she said, mocking Ebube of not being a good dancer fit for the festival which holds reward for the best female dancer and best fisherman.
